Accommodation in Centurion, Then and Now
Centurion’s small, lush, and leafy suburb of Clubview is the home of our distinctive 4-star boutique hotel, known as Kleinkaap Boutique Hotel, a popular venue among discerning guests who seek excellent accommodation, delicious, South African-inspired meals, and conference, function, event, and wedding venues in beautiful, tranquil surroundings.
We’ve noticed that some people are under the impression that Centurion is a suburb of Pretoria, but this is not so. Centurion is relatively close to Pretoria – some 20 odd minutes’ travel by road, making our establishment a great place for accommodation when visiting Pretoria, without being one of its suburbs.
Changes of Names and Status
The fact that Centurion has undergone numerous name changes in the latter half of the 20th century has probably contributed to this commonplace misperception about Centurion. As a result, we’d like to clarify the confusion about Centurion’s previous names and its status, for the edification of guests who are unfamiliar with our recent past and intend booking their accommodation here.
Original Accommodation at Kleinkaap Boutique Hotel
Although our hotel, its venues, and our 34 spacious, comfy guest accommodation suites evoke the charming ambience of yesteryear, the furnishings, décor, and Cape Dutch architecture and style of Kleinkaap combine beautifully with modern standards of luxury and comfort. The original house, which we modernised and extended at our estate, is almost as old as the first European farmsteads that accommodated residents and visitors to the Centurion region at the turn of the 19th century.
Irene and Doornkloof
Doornkloof was one of the principal farms of the area that would eventually become today’s thriving city of Centurion. In 1889, Alois Nelmapius purchased parts of Doornkloof and named them “Irene” in honour of his daughter. The town of Irene was established in 1902 and has since become a part of Centurion.
Droogegrond, Lyttelton, and Centurion
Portions of another adjacent farm, Droogegrond, were designated as Lyttelton Township in 1904. Later, Irene, Lyttelton, and Doornkloof were combined under the name “Lyttelton”, first a peri-urban suburb of Pretoria and then, in 1962, a city with its own city council. Lyttelton’s name changed to Verwoerdburg in 1967 and then again to Centurion in 1995, which brings us to here and now.
